Kennewick police arrested a man late Saturday on suspicion of DUI after he crashed his vehicle into an open field north of Amistad Elementary School.

A police commander said Richard Hernandez, 21, failed to negotiate a turn from eastbound Carmichael Drive onto southbound Ione Street. Hernandez’s Pontiac sedan struck concrete posts, then went through a fence before ending up in an open field.

Hernandez fled the scene on foot, but police said they found him soon after. Officers booked Hernandez into the Benton County jail on suspicion of DUI and hit and run.

No one was reported hurt.
