Work to start on Benton City roundabout

Officials broke ground Tuesday on a long-awaited roundabout at the Interstate 82 interchange with highways 224 and 225 in Benton City.

The $4.5 million project is the first to start construction under the $16 billion transportation package the Legislature passed this year. Rotschy Inc. of Vancouver, Wash., submitted the low bid of $2.7 million, for the construction work. Construction is set to begin in the spring.

Also included in the project is a new interchange about four miles west of the roundabout the $27 million Red Mountain and West Richland interchange.

Dignitaries attending the event included Curtis King, R-Yakima, the state Senate Transportation Committee Chairman, Benton City Mayor Lloyd Carnahan, Brian White, the state Department of Transportation acting regional administrator, and Federal Highway Administration Regional Administrator Dan Mathis.
