Herald makeover launches today

Beginning today, we’ve given the newspaper and our website a makeover — with you in mind.

We’ve changed the Tri-City Herald’s front-page design in response to reader requests to provide a better guide to content throughout the paper. The front page will focus on the major stories of the day, add more photos and highlight stories in other sections so you won’t miss them.

You’ll see a more colorful and bold design throughout the paper which will make the pages easy to read.

The sections will remain the same and your favorite features will be in the places you’re already used to.

Colors will guide you to your favorite content in the print edition — blue for news, red for food and entertainment, green for sports and gold for Sunday’s opinion section.

Our digital products also are getting a new look that reflects the needs of today’s busy readers. You’ll find quick summaries of key points, stand-out details and quotes that capture your attention and elements that offer more information.

Our web homepage will feature the best of our “now” content at the top and our deeper, more analytical stories and commentary, including videos, in the middle. You’ll also find that our videos are better integrated into the stories.

There’s also a features section, offering the best of our living and entertainment information, toward the bottom.

The website is now responsive, automatically adapting to your screen size, no matter what device you’re using.

These improvements are based on the ever-changing habits of our readers. How you get news and information has changed dramatically in recent years.

We want to give you what you want, when you want it and how you want it — whether on newsprint, cellphone, computer or tablet.

The improvements play to the distinctive advantages of each — the latest breaking news, photos and videos online, and the longer stories and commentary in print.

We started making changes in the newspaper earlier this year when we reorganized our news sections and added the Depth section, where we can feature longer stories, and the Explore section, for interesting features.

What’s not changing is our commitment to work hard to be your trusted source of news and information.

We’ve been a successful and integral part of the Mid-Columbia for nearly 70 years. We intend to be around for a lot longer.

We welcome your thoughts on these changes.
