Officials: Shot at Milton-Freewater school not likely fired in anger

Law enforcement officials said today the bullet found lodged in the back door of Pleasant View High School Wednesday morning was not likely fired in anger.

“There’s nothing to indicate it was an attack on the school,” Umatilla County Undersheriff Jim Littlefield said.

Littlefield said the incident could have been related to hunting or a misfire as there are fields and orchards near the school, which is located northwest of Milton-Freewater on rural Pleasant View Road.

The bullet appears to be between a .32 and .38 caliber.

A school custodian found a bullet hole in the front door of Pleasant View, an alternative high school, at approximately 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The bullet apparently ricocheted off a trophy case and was eventually found in the back door of the building, Milton-Freewater School District Superintendent Rob Clark said.

Pleasant View Principal Suzy Mayes told the East Oregonian the shooting must have happened at night, as she left the building at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night and nothing was amiss.

Pleasant View canceled classes for today while the incident is being investigated. Students will not return to class until Tuesday as the school is not normally open on Fridays and the district is celebrating Veterans Day on Monday.
