Trashed dunes force closure near Pomeroy

POMEROY -- The Army Corps of Engineers has closed Illia Dunes over safety concerns after more than 3,000 people visited the dunes over the past weekend.

A date to reopen the area has not been announced, but it will not be open Labor Day weekend, the Corps said.

Large amounts of trash were scattered on the beach, broken bottles and beer cans were left in the water, refuse was strewn about the parking lots and litter was discarded along the roadway, the Corps said.
