Herald photographers win AP photo awards

Two Tri-City Herald photographers have won awards in the 2010 Washington-Oregon Associated Press Photo Contest.

Kai-Huei Yau took first place in the spot news category for nonmetro newspapers for his photo of a passer-by reaching out to hold the hand of a woman trapped inside an overturned car. He also won four awards in the 2009 contest.

And Paul T. Erickson took third place in the sports category for nonmetro newspapers for his photo of a tumbling high hurdler who had clipped a hurdle and fallen to the track.

The awards were announced at the annual Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association convention in Portland, which ended Friday.
