A 23-year-old scooter rider was seriously hurt after reportedly running a stop sign and being hit by a car early Monday in a downtown Kennewick neighborhood.

Investigators said the woman was riding her electric scooter without a helmet north on North Hartford Street about 5:20 a.m., Kennewick Sgt. Zach Moore and Commander Ryan Kelly told the Tri-City Herald.

She reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign at Grand Ronde Avenue and was hit by a car that was heading north.

Moore said she was thrown to the ground and hit her head.

She suffered serious head injuries and was initially unresponsive, but regained consciousness while being taken to the hospital.

Her condition later on Monday was not immediately available.
