A 34-year-old Benton County inmate is in serious condition after attempting suicide on Sunday.

The man, whose name wasn’t released, tied his shirt around the “ligature resistant” sprinkler and tried to strangle himself in a booking area cell, Benton County officials said in a news release. Jail staff found him about 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Corrections officers and medical staff began performing CPR and using a defibrillator on the man. He was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center where he is in serious, but stable condition, the news release said.

Officials said the man had been in the jail since April 16 when he was booked in at 12:45 p.m. by the Kennewick police department.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation.
