An 18-year-old Pasco man was arrested over the weekend after speeding away from police twice.
Isaiah K. Kosgei was reportedly driving a Ford Mustang without any license plates when a Benton County sheriff’s deputy spotted him on Clearwater Avenue at 2;15 a.m. on Saturday and tried to pull him over, said a sheriff’s office Facebook post.
When the deputy signaled him to stop, Kosgei allegedly sped away at more than 100 mph down one of Kennewick’s busiest commercial streets, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy did not pursue him because of the risk to other drivers, said officials. Dash cam footage shows it was dark outside, but it’s unclear what time it was.
Kennewick police officers reported spotting the car driving away recklessly away. And Washington State Patrol troopers caught up with the Mustang near the Columbia Basin College campus in Pasco, after punctured its tires.
A passenger, who hasn’t been identified, ran away, but Kosgei was arrested.
He was booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of two counts of eluding police, court documents said.
It is the second time in about six months that Kosgei has been accused of trying to elude officers. He was driving a 2021 Ford Mustang about 11 p.m. in July when he allegedly fled from police on Burden Boulevard. The chase continued on Road 76 and Sandifur Parkway, where he reached 96 mph, said investigators.
Police called off the chase, and then went to Kosgei’s home, where he was arrested.
He was charged with attempting to elude police in Franklin County, and had showed up for hearings, but a $5,000 warrant was issued last week after he failed to show up for court.
