Several people needed to be taken to area hospitals Tuesday afternoon after an apparent carbon monoxide leak was reported at a packaging center near the former Railex rail hub at Wallula Gap, southeast of Pasco.

Multiple agencies responded to the call about 3 p.m. at Basin Ag Solutions on Railex Road. No other details were immediately available.

Medics and Walla Walla County Fire District 5 were still at the scene at 5 p.m.

Initial calls said about 20 people had evacuated outside after feeling lightheaded and dizzy. Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that replaces oxygen in the blood, causing poisoning and potentially death in humans.

Emergency officials called for more ambulances to take some of the workers to be checked. But more information was not immediately available.

Basin Ag Solutions is in industrial area in western Walla Walla County near the Columbia River that includes a transportation warehouse and hub operated by Tri-Cities Intermodal in the Wallula Gap area.
