Veterans Day in Tri-Cities area brings annual parade and ceremonies

The annual Tri-Cities Veterans Day Parade and additional ceremonies are planned to pay tribute this year to the thousands of veterans in the community and victims of wars.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall replica will be on display near Pendleton, about a 75-minute drive from the Tri-Cities

In addition, events are planned in the Tri-Cities to provide services and job-hunting help to veterans.

Saturday parade

West Richland’s annual parade starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, on West Van Giesen Street.

Last year’s event featured over 100 entries, including floats, marching bands, military vehicles and community groups.

The West Richland Chamber of Commerce invites anyone interested in volunteering, registering to be in the parade or wanting to be a sponsor to go to the chamber’s website.

Pasco ceremony

The city of Pasco will host a 3 p.m. ceremony at Volunteer Park, 1125 N. Fourth Ave., on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

The ceremony will honor the men and women who bravely served in the United States Armed Forces.

The free, public event will feature patriotic songs, a flag ceremony and a wreath placement. The keynote speaker is Felix Vargas.

Columbia Park event

The city of Kennewick and Kennewick VFW Post #5785 will honor Veterans Day at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at Columbia Park in Kennewick.

The event also will commemorate the 21st anniversary of the Regional Veterans Memorial.

The Knights of Columbus Honor Guard will raise the U.S. flag. Speakers will include Kennewick Councilman Jason McShane and veterans advocate Richard Rogers.

At 40 feet tall, the Regional Veterans Memorial is the tallest freestanding granite structure in the U.S.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial replica wall

A nearly full-size replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall and displays will be open 24 hours a day from noon Friday Nov. 7 through Tuesday Nov. 11 at the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute.

The museum and interpretive center is at 47106 Wildhorse Blvd., 10 minutes east of Pendleton, Ore. Take Exit 216 off Interstate 84.

Reveille and posting of colors is scheduled for 8 a.m. each day after it opens, with taps played at 9 p.m. Friday through Monday.

Resume workshop for veterans, spouses

A workshop to fine tune resumes and master interviews is planned for veterans and military spouses 2-4 p.m. Nov. 12 at WorkSource Columbia Basin, 815 N. Kellogg St., Suite D, Kennewick.

The session will cover topics such as applying expertise to new career fields and how to use LinkedIn to build an online presence to catch the eye of recruiters.

Veterans Resource Expo

A Veterans Resource Expo is planned for Friday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Southridge Sports & Events Complex at 2901 Southridge Blvd. in Kennewick.

It’s being organized by the Columbia Basin Veterans Alliance, based in Pasco, and will feature a variety of resources for veterans, including housing, employment, veterans benefits, haircuts, surplus items, workshops and more.

Wreaths Across America in December

Cemeteries in Kennewick, Pasco, Richland and Benton City will take part in the National Wreaths Across America Day tradition.

In communities nationwide, volunteers will place wreaths on the graves of veterans during the month of December. Wreaths Across America began at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992.

This will be Pasco’s third year participating. This year’s event is at 11 a.m. on Dec. 13 at City View Cemetery.

There are more than 950 veterans laid to rest at the cemetery from the Spanish-American War through the Korean War, World War I and World War II, to a special memorial for a Civil War soldier.

Members of the public can sign up to sponsor a wreath, volunteer for the event or offer a corporate sponsorship on the City View Cemetery page on the Wreaths Across America website.

Wreaths also will be placed during ceremonies at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick, Kiona-Benton Cemetery Association Evergreen Cemetery in Benton City and Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland.
