Richland’s ongoing work to update the intersection at George Washington Way and Aaron Drive and Columbia Point Drive moves into a new phase on Monday.

Underground utility work will require temporary lane reductions and some street closures beginning Oct. 27, the city announced. The work involves installing new underground conduits to support a new traffic signal system.

The northbound right turn lane onto Columbia Point Drive remains closed.

The intersection project is different from the city’s plan to reconfigure George Washington Way and Jadwin Avenue into one-way streets beginning in 2026.

Here’s what drivers can expect in the coming week at the city’s southern entrance.

5 a.m., Oct. 27

Columbia Point Drive will be closed at George Washington Way. Local businesses can be accessed from the east using Bradley Boulevard until the road reopens around 10 a.m.

10 a.m., Oct. 27

Aaron Drive will be closed at George Washington. The detour will route motorists at Goethals Drive to Comstock and back to George Washington until Aaron reopens by 3 p.m.

6 a.m., Oct. 28

Southbound lanes at George Washington and Aaron and Columbia Drive will be reduced to one lane. Access to Columbia Point Drive from the southbound turn lane will be closed until “early afternoon.”

Mid-morning, Oct. 28

Northbound George Washington Way will be reduced to one lane until around 4 p.m.

The city advises motorists to avoid the area or expect delays.

The intersection project is adding new lanes and sidewalks to improve traffic conditions at the busy intersection.
