Another ‘No Kings’ anti-Trump protest planned in Tri-Cities. See when and where

Protesters are again gathering across the United States — including in Tri-Cities — to speak up against President Donald Trump and his administration’s policies.

Months after millions of people participated in ”No Kings” protests across the country, community members will meet up for peaceful demonstrations on Saturday, Oct. 18, focused on showcasing the power of the masses.

“Millions of us are rising again to show the world: America has no kings, and the power belongs to the people,” organizers said on the No Kings website.

As of Tuesday, Oct. 14, more than 2,500 protests were planned across the United States, organizers said in a news release.

Here’s what you need to know about Saturday’s protest:

What is No Kings Day?

Organizers described No Kings as a “day of peaceful action” uniting Americans in “nonviolent protest against President Trump’s authoritarian actions and power grabs.”

Several organizations — including the American Civil Liberties Union, American Federation of Teachers and League of Conservation Voters — have partnered with protest organizers.

No Kings protesters previously gathered for anti-Trump demonstrations on June 14 — the same day as a massive military parade in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday.

Nationwide, more than five million people participated in the June day of action, No Kings organizers said.

In June and July, multiple Kennewick protests yielded turnouts of more than 1,000 participants, the Tri-City Herald previously reported.

Why are people protesting President Trump?

The national theme for Saturday’s demonstration is “Power belongs to the people.”

Reasons for Saturday’s protests include the Trump administration “silencing voters,” “handing billionaires giveaways while families struggle” and military responses in American communities.

“It’s not just politics,” No Kings organizers said.

“With Halloween around the corner, the timing is perfect to call out the spooky tricks of gerrymandering and power grabs,” organizers of the Tri-Cities No Kings protest said.

Where is next No Kings protest in Tri-Cities? When?

The next nationwide No Kings protest is on Saturday, Oct. 18.

In Tri-Cities, the demonstration will be at Columbia Center Blvd. in Kennewick from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Held through Indivisible Tri-Cities, the protest will line the street starting around the mall. As attendees show up, they’ll line the sidewalk down the block.

Organizers stressed their commitment to nonviolent action. Participants are asked to leave all weapons at home, including legally permitted weapons.

“We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events,” Tri-Cities protest organizers said.

In addition to gathering in peaceful demonstration, Indivisible Tri-Cities is collecting donations at the protest.

Volunteers will be accepting winter gear including coats, gloves and hats in all sizes for St. Vincent de Paul, organizers said, “because building a strong democracy means caring for one another.”
