A mother and her two children were left without a home Thursday when a fire gutted their single-wide mobile home.

The blaze started in a back room about 1:15 p.m. on the 7300 block of West Bonnie Avenue, Deputy Chief Jake Van Horn told the Tri-City Herald.

No one was home at the time but a neighbor spotted the smoke and called 911.

When firefighters arrived, they confirmed nobody was home.

Two neighboring homes were evacuated by Kennewick police as a precaution. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading, Van Horn said.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in 10 minutes and spent the next couple of hours making sure it didn’t reignite, Van Horn said.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, but Van Horn said it isn’t considered suspicious.

The family who lived there were left without a place to stay, and the American Red Cross is helping them, fire officials said.
