As Richland braces for 2,500 triathletes to pour through town Sunday morning, motorists and visitors are advised to plan ahead if they want to see the action or skip traffic.

The second Ironman 70.3 race runs from 6:25 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday. The start and finish center is Ironman Village at Columbia Point Marina, but the 56-mile bike route promises to impact key roadways across Richland and West Richland.

Visit Tri-Cities, the event’s host, has released detailed descriptions of where and when the race will affect traffic.

But for casual observers, the takewaway is this: If you want to avoid being caught up in Ironman traffic, consider avoiding errands and tasks that take you to the area Sunday morning.

If it’s unavoidable, contact the special hot line for help finding your way around: 509-713-2742.

Key chokepoints to keep in mind

Emergency vehicles take priority. The race will be stopped to let ambulances, fire engines and similar vehicles pass.

Avoid Columbia Point. The boat ramp and marina parking lot will be closed the entire weekend, Sept. 19-Sept. 21. Use the Columbia Park West Marina on the opposite side of the Yakima River delta to access the Columbia River.

Boat launches at Leslie Groves and Howard Amon Park will be closed much of the weekend, as will park entrances along the river.

Spengler Street will be posted with temporary no parking signs. Violators will be towed at their own expense.

The Washington Department of Transportation advises travelers to expect delays on Highway 240 — the Bypass Highway — starting at 6:30 a.m. Delays are expected at the intersections with Jadwin Avenue and Van Giesen Street.

Be part of the action. A free shuttle will usher athletes and spectators to Columbia Park, Ironman Village and the start/finish line beginning at 4 a.m. on race day. Athletes have priority in the early hours. Shuttles run through 6 p.m. Parking and pickup are at 651 Mansfield St., Richland and 825 Jadwin Ave.
