Bicyclist hit and killed by car on Duportail in south Richland
A bicyclist riding on Duportail Street in Richland was hit and killed by a car on Wednesday morning.
A driver called 911 about 5:35 a.m. after hitting the cyclist near City View Drive, which sits at the top of the hill between Queensgate Drive and the Duportail Bridge, according to initial emergency dispatch reports. The collision was just north of Richland Fire Station 74.
The driver and bicyclist were both heading south when they collided, Richland police Commander Damon Jensen told the Tri-City Herald.
Police described the bicyclist as being in his 50s, dispatch reports said.
Investigators have learned the identity of the man who died and are waiting to release it to give family members more time to tell relatives and friends, Chief Deputy Coroner Dennis Morris told the Herald.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
Richland police closed the uphill, southbound lanes of Duportail Bridge near Highway 240 while they investigated. The lanes have since reopened.
That section of road is part of the 56 miles through Richland and West Richland that will be used by 2,500 competitors during the bicycle portion of the Ironman 70.3 Washington Tri-Cities race on Sunday.
