Street work begins at this congested Tri-Cities roundabout. Expect delays

Kennewick is warning drivers to avoid the roundabout at 27th Avenue and Union Street this week as work crews place new markings for faded crosswalks.

The work — set to take place Tuesday through Thursday — will be weather dependent.

“Expect delays as crews work in the area,” the city wrote in a post to Facebook. “Flaggers will be present to assist with traffic flow.”

Kennewick schools are out this week for spring break, said Deputy Public Works Director Jeremy Lustig, which means there will be less traffic in the area.

But drivers should consider taking an alternate route if they’re in the area. U.S. 395 provides a north-south alternative, and other east-west streets can be used in lieu of 27th.

Lustig says the roundabout will remain open.

The weather is expected to be mostly sunny this week, with highs in the 60s, according to the National Weather Service in Pendleton. No rain is forecast after Monday.

The old crosswalks are faded and out of compliance, Lustig said.
