Vandalized Richland shoreline parks will reopen in time for St. Patrick’s Day foot race
Richland parks officials are finalizing plans to reopen two vandalized parks to the public on March 15.
As it prepares to reopen Columbia Park West and Wye Park, the city’s parks officials are visiting with area businesses to alert them to changes that have happened in the area since the parks were closed Oct. 25, amid a rash of vandalism and damage, including numerous fires.
The city blamed the continuing problems on homeless campers as well as people using drugs and littering the Columbia River shoreline with garbage and drug paraphernalia, including needles.
The reopening comes as the Three Rivers Road Runners welcome runners to the St. Patrick’s Day Foot Race on March 15. St. Patrick’s Day is March 17.
During the shutdown, the parks were cleaned and vegetation along the shoreline was cut back to reduce the spots where campers could conceal themselves from passers by.
To prevent problems in the future, the city said it is increasing patrols by park rangers and the Richland Police Department and assigning park staff to help when needed. It is collaborating with Benton County Human services to work with people who do not have homes who want help.
Joe Schiessl, deputy city manager, called the closure an unfortunate but necessary step.
“We understand the importance of these parks to our residents and are pleased to welcome the community back,” he said.
