Pasco police and two school districts are investigating a “physical altercation” after a varsity basketball match up Tuesday night between the Hanford High and Pasco High boys teams.

The incident involved both students and adults, and took place at Pasco High School during senior night. It’s unclear if those involved were part of the Bulldogs or Falcon teams.

Pasco police investigators posted on Facebook that they are asking for the community’s help in gathering video or photos of the fight to help with their investigation.

Pasco Councilman Leo Perales said in a Facebook post that he’s heard accounts that a racial slur may have been used and that a coach may have been involved in the fight.

“Emotions are high, and it’s important that we allow for a thorough and fair investigation,” said his post.

Pasco School District in a letter to families said it was working closely with police and the Richland School District to investigate the incident.

“Based on the results of the investigation, we will take the appropriate next steps,” district staff said.

“At Pasco School District, we expect all students, staff, families, and spectators to demonstrate good sportsmanship, respect, and positive behavior at all school events. Athletic competitions should foster teamwork and school pride and there is no place for violence or inappropriate conduct from anyone in attendance,” it continued.

Richland School District public information officer Shawna Dinh said in a Wednesday statement that their staff was “working closely with Pasco High and Pasco School District administration to investigate the situation and take any necessary actions.”
