A Pasco family is dealing with a huge loss this holiday season after a father of blended family of seven kids was killed in a tanker truck fire outside of Spokane.

Robert Martinez, 51, died Dec. 5 when the gasoline tanker truck he was driving crashed and rolled over west of Cheney, according to the Washington State Patrol.

His obituary described Martinez as a man who “had a heart as big as his smile, and he could always be counted on for a kind word, a good laugh, and positive spirit.”

A family friend, Richard Dignum, set up a GoFundme post in order to help the family deal with the unexpected tragedy.

“Robert was a hardworking, selfless man who dedicated his life to providing for his family and always put others before himself,” Dignum wrote. “He was the kind of person who would lend a helping hand to anyone in need, and his absence leaves a tremendous void in the lives of those who knew him.”

Now the family is faced with the financial burden that comes with a sudden tragedy.

Dignum said that Martinez’s passing has left his wife, Kim, and their three children dealing with unimaginable grief and facing an uncertain future without the love and support Robert provided. He was also a stepfather to four children.

The family held a celebration of life for Martinez on Saturday.

“Robert’s generosity of spirit extended far beyond his immediate family,” his obituary stated. “He had a knack for making everyone around him feel valued and loved. His humor and warmth brought people together, and he left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Though Robert’s time with us was far too short, his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched.”

Due to the fire WSP had still not officially listed Martinez as the victim, but the family told KREM-TV that they had confirmed the tragedy.

Dignum hopes that support from the community will help ease their burden a little.

“Thank you for your kindness, love, and support,” he wrote. “Let’s come together to help Kim and their children heal, knowing that Robert’s spirit will live on in their hearts forever.”

Martinez is survived by his wife Kim and his three children Maggie, Gavin, and Damien, as well as his stepchildren Kyele, Elizabeth, Tyeler, and Brendyn.
