2 more of Richland’s detested railroad crossings will be rebuilt in October
The main entrance to the Richland Airport off Highway 240 will be closed while the railroad crossing is rebuilt in October. A second crossing will be rebuilt a few weeks later.
Airport users can access the air field west of the bypass highway via Terminal Drive and West Van Giesen Street.
The Port of Benton, which owns and operates the airport, is rebuilding the railroad crossing at Airport Way the week of Oct. 4-7. The Saint Street crossing will be rebuilt Oct. 18-21.
The Saint Street work will block access in an out of Moon River RV Park. Residents will be limited to right turns during construction.
The work continues a series of crossing repairs necessitated by deteriorating conditions that jarred vehicles and prompted widespread complaints from Tri-Cities motorists. The Van Giesen crossing was rebuilt in 2022.
Railworks Track Systems is the contractor for the October work, which include replacing the railroad crossings with new concrete panels, pavement, gates and lights. Detours will be marked.
The project is funded with state grants and local port funds.
