Sept. 11 ceremony in Tri-Cities to mark key moments on 23rd anniversary

The 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks will be marked with a series of events at the 9/11 Memorial at Kennewick’s Southridge Sports & Events Complex.

The Kennewick memorial includes a 35-foot piece of steel weighing 3 tons from the World Trade Center complex, which was hauled to the Tri-Cities through the efforts of Lampson International, the city of Kennewick and the Port Authorities of New York and New Jersey.

The memorial at 2901 Southridge Blvd. was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2011, on the 10th anniversary.

The 2024 schedule of events:

  • 6:30 a.m.: Presentation of the Colors, National Anthem/Posting of the Guard
  • 6:45 a.m.: Start of changing of the guard every 30 minutes.
  • 8:46 a.m.: Moment of Silence for American Airlines Flight 11 and the North Tower.
  • 9:03 a.m.: Moment of Silence for United Airlines Flight 175 and the South Tower.
  • 9:37 a.m.: Moment of Silence for American Airlines Flight 77 and occupants of the Pentagon and passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Penn.
  • 9:59 a.m.: Bell Signal for emergency responders who died when the South Tower collapsed.
  • 10:28 a.m.: Bell Signal for emergency responders who died when the North Tower collapsed.
  • 10:30 a.m.: Lower and folding of the flag in honor of all people killed.
  • 10:45 a.m.: Retirement of colors and end of memorial event.

The Honor Guard consists of members of the Tri-Cities Professional Firefighters Honor Guard and members of the Kennewick Police and Benton County sheriff’s departments.
