8 ducklings ran afoul of storm drain in Pasco. Here’s what happened next

Pasco firefighters engaged in a different kind of rescue operation Tuesday morning.

It started about 9 a.m. when someone saw some ducklings slip down a storm drain on Lewis Street outside the Pasco School District administration office.

When emergency crews arrived, they discovered eight ducklings at the bottom of the storm drain and a nervous mother duck nearby, Ben Shearer, the Pasco Fire Department public information officer, told the Tri-City Herald.

Four members of Pasco’s water rescue and technical rescue teams, as well as a Richland paramedic student, put their heads together on a solution to save the fluffy babies.

They improvised a trash hook and a gurney sheet to reach down and scoop up the chicks,

The stressed hen waited nearby until they got the first few out of the drain. She then took those and hid them under a nearby bush.

The rescuers managed to get the rest of the ducklings out and reuinted with their mother.

The school district praised the rescue with a video on its Instagram page.

“Huge thanks to @pascofire for their swift and heroic assistance in saving these adorable little quackers!” the district said in its post. “Just another day at the office turned into a heartwarming adventure.”
