Several dozen students, faculty and community members gathered on the Pasco campus of Columbia Basin College for the first of three Shine the Light on Human Trafficking events to call attention to the problem.
The events are open to the public and include a presentation at 5 p.m. Wednesday by Rebecca Bender, nationally recognized human trafficking authority and former trafficking survivor. Her talk is at the Gjerde Center on the Pasco campus.
It will be followed by a question-and-answer session with a panel of experts from SARC (Support, Advocacy & Resource Center) and Mirror Ministries.

The federal Department of Justice says 8 million people are trafficked worldwide, with an estimated 14,500 and 17,500 trafficked in the U.S. each year.
