Drivers can expect delays through Friday as lanes are closed at a busy Kennewick intersection.

Workers are painting the striping on the new asphalt for the improvement project at the intersection of West Gage Boulevard and North Steptoe Street in west Kennewick.

The work is part of a $3.8 million project that started earlier this year.

The city is widening the intersection and upgrading turn lanes to dual left-turn lanes and single right-turn lanes in all directions.

New curbs, gutters, wider sidewalks, retaining walls and landscaping are also included.

It’s scheduled to be finished early next year.

The intersection at the Kennewick and Richland border is considered by some in the community as one of the most dangers and has been a priority for the city of Kennewick.

Most recently, Tressica Garza, 38, and Wayne Judd, 45, were killed in a crash in April 2022 when Mariana Souza, 29, ran a red light and slammed into their SUV, killing them instantly.

She pleaded guilty in September 2023 to two counts of vehicular manslaughter in connection with the drunk-driving crash.
