Tri-Cities drivers have become accustomed to lane changes at one of the area’s busiest intersections during ongoing construction, but this week will see total closures on Steptoe Street.

And there will be temporary lane closures on Gage Boulevard for two days.

Motorists will need to take alternate routes Wednesday and Thursday.

The intersection at Steptoe and Gage, which is right on the border of Kennewick and Richland, is one of the busiest in the area with more than 85,000 vehicles passing through it each day.

Closures started at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, with work crews beginning paving at Steptoe and Gage Boulevard.

The Gage Boulevard closures will alternate between single and double lanes depending on the progress, according to a news release from the city of Kennewick.

Steptoe is completely shut down between Tucannon Avenue and Victoria Avenue on Wednesday, but will reopen for morning commuters from 4 to 9 a.m. on Thursday.

It will then close again from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26.

Crews have been working to widen the roadway to add double left turn lanes, double through lanes and right turn lanes in all directions. The intersection will also get new traffic signals, curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

The $3.8 million project is expected to be completed in January 2024.
