Pasco is slashing the speed limit in an area that is seeing some of the fastest growth in the Tri-Cities.

The city council approved lowering the speed limit on Burns Road from 50 mph to 35 mph.

The change will impact about 2 miles of the busy street between Broadmoor Boulevard and Shoreline Court.

The reduction goes into effect Nov. 15.

The new speed limit follows a comprehensive traffic study that found the speed limit was too high for nearby residential developments.

That area formerly was outside the city limits in Franklin County, but was recently annexed by Pasco.

“With the area experiencing new residential growth and increased traffic volume, city officials saw a need to reevaluate the existing speed limit,” read a city news release.

The study found that the highest average speed recorded on the road was 43 mph, about 7 mph slower than the current limit.

Other roads similar to Burns Road in the city had a posted speed limits of 25 to 35 mph.

Officials say the new lower limit will help reduce speeding on that section of road and will improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
