Travel Alert | Highway 395 will be closed at night in Kennewick this week

Highway 395 will be fully closed overnight through south Kennewick this week while crews replace a metal sign bridge that spans the road.

The closures will last 9:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Tuesday to Saturday, April 4-8, for the stretch between Hildebrand Boulevard and the Interstate 82 junction. Traffic will detour onto local streets.

The work is part of a the $22.5 million underpass project.

The Washington Department of Transportation said the old sign structure will be removed and a new one installed in its place. The sign and hardware were staged Monday next to the highway near the new Ridgeline Drive underpass.

The zone has been under heavy construction since April 2021, when the city of Kennewick and DOT began construction to route Ridgeline Drive under the highway.

Traffic was routed to a bypass while the contractor, Scarsella Brothers, built a new bridge to carry Highway 395 over Ridgeline. The highway returned to its traditional alignment in October 2022.

Construction work halted for the season in January.

When weather permits, the contractor will pave the on-ramp and off-ramp to Ridgeline Drive and build the roundabout at the new intersection of South Zintel Road and South Bofer Canyon Road and Ridgeline Drive.

The project includes on- and off-ramps, widening the west side of the highway to Interstate 82 and the east side to Hildebrand Boulevard.
