Benton County residents can drop off hazardous waste for free on Saturday

Benton County residents can get rid of hazardous household waste and old tires for free Saturday.

Household hazardous waste will be accepted 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 30 at the Benton County Fairgrounds, 1500 S. Oak St., Kennewick.

The event will close early if full capacity is reached.

Waste will only be accepted from households in Benton County and its cities. No contractor or business waste will be accepted.

Among items that can be dropped off are paint, propane tanks, cleaners, gasoline if less than 20 gallons, mixed gas and oil, yard chemicals and fertilizers, motor oil, antifreeze, acid or alkaline batteries, fire extinguishers and pool chemicals.

Prohibited items include asbestos, ammunition, biohazards, medicine, electronics, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, and tires.

The longest lines are usually in the first hour or two of the event, say organizers.

For more information, email publicworks@co.benton.wa.us or call 509-786-5611. Call the same number for information on getting rid of fluorescent bulbs and tubes.
