Man hurt, classic car totaled in crash near cable bridge in Kennewick, police say

A classic car was totaled and its driver was taken to the hospital after a Friday morning crash in Kennewick.

Benjamin S. Kofoed, 45, of Glenwood, was heading toward the cable bridge on Gum Street in a Hyundai Accent, when he starting turning left onto Columbia Drive just after 10:30 a.m., the Washington State Patrol said. Gum Street is also known as Highway 397.

He turned right in front of a 1930 Ford Coupe that was heading south. The classic car’s driver, Gerald D. Sleater, 48, of Burbank, was taken to Trios Southridge Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

The classic car is not required to have seat belts, and none were installed, Trooper Chris Thorson explained.

Kofoed was not hurt in the crash but his Hyundai also was totaled, according to the state patrol. He was cited for failing to yield.
