New tool to battle river weeds

Matt Jasper, a Benton Conservation District employee, operates the agency’s new custom-made aquatic plant harvester on the Yakima River during a demonstration Friday at the Horn Rapids Park boat launch near Benton City.

The device will be used to battle water stargrass that grows “explosively,” especially during drought years.

The plants slow the river flow and create areas for mosquitoes to breed.
