Update: BNSF train derails after hitting semi truck west of Prosser

A BNSF train went off the rails between Prosser and Mabton, sending at eight cars off the tracks into fields.

The train hit a semi-truck at Phillips Road in Mabton near Highway 22 at 9:47 a.m., Amy Casas, the senior director of external communications at BNSF, told the Herald.

The crash derailed eight grain cars and three locomotives.

The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Washington State Patrol and Yakima County Fire District 5 were called out to help.

The train crew and the truck driver were not hurt, Casas said.

Some diesel fuel spilled on the scene, Yakima Fire District 5 said in a Facebook post.

Fire crews were expected to be at the site for a few hours. Trains are being held up while the rails are cleared.
