Honoring the lives lost 19 years ago in terrorist attacks

Visitors pause to take photos and read the sign explaining the background of the 9-11 Memorial off Highway 395 at the Southridge Sports Complex in Kennewick.

The city of Kennewick is one of a few communities in the U.S. to receive a piece of steel from the World Trade Center destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001.

The memorial was created to honor the citizens, firefighters, law enforcement officers and other emergency workers who died during the attacks.

This year is the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in suburban Pennsylvania.

The date is now designated as “Patriot Day” and U.S flags are lowered to half-staff for the day.
