Benton County drug detection K9 recovering after emergency surgery

One of Benton County’s canine crime fighters is taking it easy after emergency surgery this week.

Sawyer, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office’s drug dog, had a gastrointestinal problem, said the sheriff’s office post.

After emergency surgery at Horse Heaven Hills Pet Urgent Care, Sawyer is recovering with his handler, said the sheriff’s office. They said he should be back to work in three to four weeks.

They thanked the vet center for their excellent service.

Horse Heaven Hills Pet Urgent Care responded and said they are honored to help.

“He’s on the road to recovery and will be back to busting bad guys in no time,” they posted on Facebook.

Sawyer, a Shar-Pei and Golden Lab mix, started working at the sheriff office in 2018 after being adopted from a shelter in Oregon.

The K9 is trained to find cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine in amounts as small as three-hundreths of an ounce.
