14-year-old ATV driver is killed and his brother critical after crash with pickup truck
A 14-year-old boy died and his younger brother was critically injured Tuesday when their ATV collided with a pickup truck near Sunnyside.
The 14-year-old was driving a Polaris ATV on an orchard road and pulled out in front of the Ford pickup, said the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.
The 18-year-old truck driver from the Sunnyside area was headed south on Wendell Phillips Road when he hit the ATV about 4:40 p.m.
The 14-year-old struck the windshield and died at the scene. His 12-year-old brother suffered life-threatening injuries and initially was taken to Astria Sunnyside Hospital.
Later, he was flown by a Life Flight helicopter to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland. His condition was not available Wednesday.
No intoxicants are suspected in the crash, said the sheriff’s office news release.
