After more than 70 years in downtown Kennewick, the Tri-City Herald is moving to south Kennewick. It’s a change that reflects the company’s transformation to a digital news organization.

The Herald will relocate its news and advertising operations to a new building in the Southridge area just off Highway 395 at 4253 W. 24th Ave. on Aug. 10.

The Herald’s lobby will remain closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Last October, the McClatchy Company, owner of the Tri-City Herald since 1979, sold the downtown Kennewick building to a Pasco real estate and building firm.

D9 Contractors Inc., led by Mike Detrick, bought the two-story building for $3.98 million and leased a portion of the office to the Herald.

Because of the growth as a digital news producer, the Herald no longer needs that much space, said Jerry Hug, the Herald’s general manager and Northwest CFO for McClatchy.

“We’ll continue to be here to serve our readers and advertisers needs and to be the best source of news for the Mid-Columbia,” he said.

Digital subscriptions to access news stories on TriCityHerald.com continue to grow.

The Herald averages 6.1 million page views monthly.

History of the Herald’s location

The Herald began as the Pasco Herald and became a daily in 1947.

It moved to Kennewick the following year, setting up shop in a former pea cannery at the corner of North Cascade and West Canal.

The building underwent several renovations over the years.

Then in 2003, the company hired Chervenell Construction to build a new office on a different part of the property.

The office opened in 2004, facing West Canal Drive. The old Cascade-facing offices were demolished and became a parking lot and warehouse access point.

Detrick plans to lease the former Herald warehouse and office building, which can accommodate up to 175 employees, to new tenants.

It’s the largest privately-owned office in Kennewick’s commercial core.
