Sleepy driver sinks car in Kennewick canal

A diver from Columbia Basin Dive Rescue is helped from the Columbia Irrigation District canal early Tuesday on the 1200 block of West Canal Drive after attaching tow truck cables to a submerged Buick Century.

Driver Sergio Mendoza, 29, of Kennewick, said he fell asleep while driving home after working an overnight shift at a freight shipping business in Pasco.

“I barely got out. The door was hard to open because of the water,” he said. Police said he showed no signs of impairment.

The fire department also responded to the 6 a.m. crash.
