Tri-Cities Black Lives Matter protesters rally outside Pasco police station
For a second day, hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Tri-Cities, briefly blocking traffic Sunday on Court Street.
They were rallying with signs and chants after the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after being pinned by a Minneapolis police officer for nearly nine minutes.
Some of Sunday’s protesters at 20th Avenue and Court Street laid in the turn lane near the busy intersection for the same number of minutes.
“Police using force illegally to kill our black community is what I’m fighting against,” said Vanessa Roueche, 25, of Pasco, as she held a “Black Lives Matter” sign.
Some laid down on the sidewalk with their hands behind their backs and their heads on the curb near the busy street.
Later, others moved downtown to the Pasco police station, where they also laid on the ground, chanted and held signs.
More than 200 Tri-Citians showed up Saturday at John Dam Plaza for a peaceful protest along George Washington Way.
Other protests around the Northwest turned violent.
The Seattle Times reported Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan imposed a curfew Saturday night through Sunday. And Gov. Jay Inslee activated National Guard troops to help keep the peace.
Interstate 5 through downtown was closed for several hours because protesters were in the roadway.
