Black Lives Matter protest taking place Saturday

Tri-Citians demanding justice in the death of George Floyd in Minnesota plan a protest Saturday in Richland.

A Black Lives Matter protest is planned 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at John Dam Plaza off George Washington Way in Richland. Floyd died after being restrained by Minneapolis police officers on Memorial Day.

One officer is facing murder and manslaughter charges.

“The recent murder of George Floyd keeps replaying in my mind,” organizer Jaime Torres wrote as part of the Facebook event post. “I’m going to John Dam Plaza ... (to) protest the murder of George Floyd and for racial injustice throughout this country.”

He urged Tri-Citians to bring signs and face masks.

Eviction relief

A planned protest for rent relief by The Party for Socialism and Liberation is being merged with the Richland protest, the organizer said.

He wanted to “stand in defiance of police brutality and in support of this movement.”

The party had previously asked people to gather at Volunteer Park as part of a National Day of Car Protests.
