Western gastropub back open in Prosser — with a new menu
The Western-themed gastropub known for its savory dinners and hearty breakfasts is back open in Prosser.
And there’s a new menu.
The Horse Heaven Saloon closed for a month to revamp its food lineup.
Prosser natives Gary and Carol Vegar own and operate the restaurant and neighboring brewery.
They opened the restaurant seven years ago after renovating a historic downtown building that included a bar made from 100-year-old Douglas fir.
On the second floor the saloon at 615 6th St. there’s a traditional Old West parlor that can be rented for events, as well some bed and breakfast rooms for overnight guests.
“We pride our self on our fresh farm-to-table menu with plenty of rustic American classics and some special items to keep our menu modern,” says their website.
The Vegars’ menu offers a variety of traditional favorites, from smoked tri-tip and grilled ribeye with bacon jam and bleu cheese crumbles, to fresh choices like Baja shrimp tacos.
And don’t let the Western theme scare off those who prefer no-meat choices. The menu features a several vegetarian dishes, such as Portobello Vegan Tacos and Beer Baked Mac N’ Cheese.
“When we say ‘Western’ we really mean it. The custom made wooden front doors use authentic old-west era six-shooters and rifles as door handles,” says their site. “Inside there is authentic western long bar and artwork that visually combines with fine food, hand made beer, cocktails and a revolving offering of local wineries.”
When they first opened, they commissioned six artists to paint murals inside the building that once housed Ford’s Grill in the ‘50s and ’60s, then the Red Rose and Keno’s Restaurant.
The bar features their Horse Heaven Hills beer and traditional craft cocktails.
They started the brewery in 2009 less than a block from the saloon at 1118 Meade Ave.
Restaurant hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Sunday breakfast 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday dinner 1-8 p.m.
