Fishing, hunting and camp cooking tips. Tri-Cities Sportsmen Show opens in Pasco

The Tri-Cities Sportsmen Show returns to the Tri-Cities this week for a 27th year — bringing back some old favorites and some new features.

Kids can once again test their skills at catching a hungry trout at the ever-popular Lunker Lake or climbing a 24-foot climbing wall.

Chef Richy Harrod with be giving live demonstrations on outdoor camp cooking from his book, Cookhouse Field to Table.

This year’s event also will feature a traveling wildlife exhibit, A Walk on the Wild Side, with a close-up view of some live animals. The show has not said what animals the Hillsboro, Ore., company is bringing this time.

The show is Friday through Sunday, Jan. 17-19.

Fishing and hunting demonstrations

A series of fishing and hunting experts will share their knowledge during hourly presentations throughout the weekend.

This year’s fishing speakers are walleye fishing expert and guide, Bryan Bell; bass fishing expert and tournament fisherman, Jeff Grimes; upper Columbia fishing guide, Jerrod Gibbons on salmon fishing techniques; fishing guide, Austin Moser on fishing Lake Roosevelt, Hanford Reach salmon, sturgeon fishing, and Buoy 10 salmon.

Hunting speakers this year are bird hunting expert from Red’s Hunting Adventures, Curtis Frisbie on chukar hunting on public land; Rocky Mountain Game Call pro-staffer, Cory Christman on elk calling techniques; and champion waterfowl caller, Abel Cortina sharing waterfowl hunting tips.

Big game trophies

The 2020 Tour of NW Big Game animals returns with a display of Northwest big game trophies which will include the new state record archery mule deer buck taken in 2017 by Jake Fife.

Also, if you were wondering what your animal would score, bring it to the show and have it measured and see how it ranks against the other entries in the Record Book for Washington Big Game Animals.

This will be the last year entries can be entered into the fifth edition of the book.

Stuff for Kids

The Kids’ Korner will be at the southeast corner of the main Expo Hall.

Sunday is Kids’ Day, with ages 6-12 admitted for $5, and fishing is free all day at Lunker Lake compliments of Sportsman’s Warehouse.

Other activities for the kids on Sunday will include cooking for kids at the Outdoor Cooking Camp, learning to tie a fly at the Columbia Basin Fly Casters’ booth and a drawing for a free fishing rod at HIS Rod Shop booth.

There also will be door prizes just for kids.

The Colyak Bowhunters will once again offer the Kids’ Balloon Shoot, and the free Crosman Air Rifle Range will teach young shooters how to correctly handle a rifle while shooting at paper targets.

Hours and admission

General admission is $11 for adults; and $6 for ages 6-12. Children under 6 are free.

Friday is Seniors’ Day when everyone 60 and older gets into the show for $6. There also a military discount of $1 off any admission any day with a military ID.

On Friday and Saturday, the first 150 adults will receive a goody bag from Grigg’s Sporting Goods of Pasco.

On Sunday, the first 100 kids will receive special early bird prizes courtesy of the Tri-Cities Sportsmen Show and local donors.

Show hours are 1-7 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday at the HAPO Center, 6600 Burden Blvd.

This year’s event also will have a display of boats, campers, and vehicles on the west side of the arena.
