Richland morning commute snarled by Highway 240 chain-reaction crashes

People not paying attention caused a pair of crashes on Richland’s bypass highway during the height of the morning commute.

A 17-year-old girl crashed into a Mercedes Benz around 8 a.m., which sent her car careening into the concrete barrier on the right side of westbound lanes near Stevens Drive, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Chris Thorson.

As traffic backed up because of the crash, another driver wasn’t paying attention, and swerved into a semi truck to avoid the collision.

No one was taken to the hospital.

The right lane is expected to be blocked until around 9:30 a.m. while troopers wait for tow trucks.
