Firefighters saved several animals from a Hood Avenue home after it caught fire Tuesday.

A person passing by spotted smoke rising from the back of the two-story house on the 8000 block as dogs and cats struggled to escape.

No people were inside when firefighters from Kennewick and Richland started tackling the flames on the second-story deck, said Neil Hines, the Kennewick Fire Department’s operations chief.
