Fire threatens parking lot at Columbia Park
A small fire along Highway 240 on Saturday nearly blackened some green areas of Columbia Park
It’s not likely firefighters will be able to determine what sparked the latest in a series of fires that have been blackening the median between Columbia Drive and Edison Street for the past month. This one began about a mile away from Edison on the Columbia Park side of the highway.
“It could be multiple things from cars throwing sparks to cigarettes,” said Batallion Chief Kevin Crowley.
When Kennewick firefighters arrived, they found flames moving through the dry grass, and sparks starting small fires in the nearby posts and in mulch in the park.
They were able to contain the fire to about an acre near the side of the road in about fifteen minutes.
No one was injured and no property was damaged.
Workers were cutting down trees after fire spread into the branches.
