Firefighters mostly put down a day-old wildfire Thursday near Sacajawea State Park, but parts are still smoldering in the heavy sagebrush.

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. Independence Day between Road 40 and Sacajawea Park Road.

The cause is under investigation, but officials said the fire could be linked to aerial fireworks.

Ben Shearer, Pasco Fire Department's public information officer, said the problem is the fire can smolder in the 5- to 6-foot-tall sagebrush for a long time.

"It's a good possibility that's a spot we may have to deal with again," he said.

Pasco school resource officer Jared Quinlan spotted new flames at 10:45 a.m., police said.

The Pasco Fire Department and Franklin County Fire District 3 contained the blaze and protected nearby power poles.

Anyone who sees the fire restart should call 911.
