If you see a low-flying plane in the Tri-Cities, it might not be what you think

Tri-City Herald File

Tri-Cities residents may see low-flying airplanes near the Yakima and Columbia rivers Wednesday.

Benton County Mosquito Control District plans its first flights of the mosquito season over West Richland, Richland and Finley.

Every three weeks, the district plans flights to drop granular larvicide into areas of the river where mosquitoes may hatch.

Later in the season, flights to spray for adult mosquitoes will be added.

Larvicide flights are done during the day, and flights targeting flying and biting adult mosquitoes are done at night.

The Wednesday flights as a precaution as warming weather will start to warm pockets of water, said Angela Beehler, district manager.

The West Richland flight will kill larvae in the Yakima River from near West Van Giesen Street upstream.

In Richland, drops may be done at the Yakima and Columbia rivers' delta and at Columbia Point.

Targets in Finley may include Two Rivers Park and the water at the end of Toothaker Road.
