Richland's favorite son is visiting Pasco in early May.

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis is hosting a public forum aimed at military veterans and their families at 11 a.m. on May 5 at Columbia Basin College's Gjerde Center.

Mattis, a retired Marine general and Richland native, wants to hear the challenges people face as they transition from the armed services to civilian life, and the relationship between military and civilian life.

He will address the crowd before taking questions.

The event is open to the first 500 people, with preference given to veterans and their families. It is sponsored by the Columbia Basin Veterans Opportunity Center and Columbia Basin College VETS.
