The Yakima River is expected to rise quickly this week as warm weather melts snow upriver.

The U.S. Geological Survey gauge at Kiona— the closest gauge to the Tri-Cities — measured 6.5 feet of water at noon Sunday.

By Tuesday evening the river is forecast to crest there at 10.74 feet, according to information from the National Weather Service.

When the river reaches 11 feet, people are urged to use caution near its banks and to move animals out of low-lying pastures. Flood stage is 13 feet.

The temperature climbed into the 60s Sunday in the Tri-Cities, which is more than 10 degrees warmer than usual.

Highs should be in the mid to upper 50s through Friday in the Tri-Cities, according to the weather service.

It predicts lows as mild as 40 degrees this week, before temperatures drop back to near freezing on Friday night.
