Kennewick police are trying to track down the source of a threat that sent Southridge High School into heightened Thursday.

A student alerted police and the school district to a threat posted on Facebook that warned Southridge students about potential violence at the school. The post came from a student outside of the school district.

At least one of the posts that was circulating warned students of a possible shooting and to be careful.

After learning about the threats, police increased their presence at the school.

“We take all threats seriously and investigate each report thoroughly given the information that is available,” Southridge officials posted on Facebook.

“The post that was discovered on social media was very general and not credible,” said police. “The student that brought this to our attention did the right thing so we could fully investigate and keep our schools safe.”

The threat comes slightly more than a week after Pasco police responded to a threat made to Pasco High.

Officials were able to identify the person responsible in that case, the school district said.
