Hermiston 7-year-old found a gun. Now a toddler is fighting for his life

A Hermiston toddler remains in critical condition Monday after their 7-year-old brother accidentally shot him in the head.

Police officials said the child initially was treated at Good Shepherd Hospital. Officials there notified police.

Pendleton police helped by interviewing the 7-year-old boy.

No other details about the case, including how the child got the gun, were released.

The Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office will review the case for possible charges. Oregon’s Child Protective Services is involved.

The Benton-Franklin Health District released a statement asking parents to review tips on how to maintain gun safety at home.

They include talking to children about how guns work, using gun locks and securely storing them out of sight.
